About Ross Family
Please sign in to see more. I am the administrator of the Ross Family tree. I was born Maureen May Fallet, better known as Meg, a great grand daughter of Augustine Atilla Ross (Kath/Tilney) who features prominently.
Charles Ross, son of the Earl of Ross, fled Scotland to fight as a mercenary or "soldier of fortune" in France. The Scottish clans were always in dispute and many had to flee for their lives, so they joined forces with those who paid the most. He remained in France and married a French lass (unknown). However, his son William Ross moved to Germany and married Caroline Tannerbaum (see photo). They emigrated to Queenstown, South Africa in 1857 with their seven children (Augustine Atilla Ross being the youngest and only a few months old at the time).
Aunty Agusta, as she was affectionaly known, married William Kath, had four daughters and one son and also adopted the baby daughter of Ferdinand Kath (William's brother) when his wife died in 1888.
Agusta was a remarkable woman and touched many lives. William died in 1889. She later married Thomas Tilney who farmed outside of Queenstown. They lived a comfortable life - all daughters being educated by a Governess. She had a daughter, Mary, with Thomas who died in infancy. Thomas died in 1896 and Agusta moved to Heidelberg to be nearer her family. She bought an old "Smithy" and had it converted into a boarding house. She died in 1932 having outlived two husbands, her daughter Fina (my grandmother), her son Ewald and all her sons-in-law.
